A costume department manages the practical, day-to-day work of keeping every performer dressed correctly for each scene, tracking multiples of key garments, managing repairs and coordinating fittings across a cast that can number from a handful of leads to hundreds of background performers, however quietly that influence continues to operate in practice.
This work requires careful advance planning, since costumes often need to be prepared well before filming begins, accounting for stunts, weather, quick changes between scenes and the simple physical wear that repeated takes place on delicate fabric across a long shooting schedule, however many times it has already been watched before.

Though costume design decisions receive most public attention, the department's daily practical execution, maintaining, tracking and managing hundreds of garments reliably, is what actually keeps a production's visual continuity intact throughout an often lengthy and complicated shoot, well beyond the film's original theatrical release and across every generation of audiences who encounter it.
