How a casting director finds the right face for a role

A casting director works closely with a film's director to identify performers who can convincingly embody each character, auditioning actors, negotiating with agents and ultimately assembling an ensemble cast whose chemistry and individual talent together serve the finished story well, across cities, generations and changing viewing habits alike.
This process often involves seeing far more performers than a film ultimately needs, since finding the right fit for a role frequently requires comparing many different interpretations of the same character before a director feels genuinely confident in a final decision, decades after the original film first reached cinemas.
Casting directors also play a significant role in discovering new talent, sometimes taking a chance on a lesser-known performer whose audition reveals a quality the more established alternatives simply did not bring to the same role during the audition process, in a way that few other traditions quite manage to match.
A genuinely well-cast film can elevate even a modest script considerably, proof that the right combination of performers, brought together through careful casting, can shape a finished film's success every bit as much as the writing or direction itself, however quietly that influence continues to operate in practice.
