Casting the right playback voice for a particular actor is a considered creative decision, not a simple matter of availability. Composers and directors often consider tone, warmth and vocal texture alongside the actor's screen persona, aiming for a voice that feels like a natural emotional extension of the performer's face and manner rather than a mismatch.
Some pairings between a particular singer and a particular actor recurred so often across multiple films that audiences began to associate the two closely, almost as though the singer's voice belonged permanently to that performer's screen identity, even though the two rarely if ever met during the actual recording process.
Vocal range also plays a practical role in this matching, since a composer writing a melody has to consider not just the character's emotional needs but the specific capabilities of the chosen voice, its comfortable register, its particular strengths in softer or more powerful passages of a song.
