Footwear rarely receives the same attention as a costume's more visible upper elements, yet designers still choose shoes deliberately, since the right pair can subtly reinforce a character's class, personality or regional background even when barely visible within a typical mid-shot or wider framing of a scene.
Practical considerations weigh heavily in footwear decisions specifically, since a performer often has to run, dance or navigate difficult terrain in whatever shoes a designer selects, meaning comfort and stability sometimes take priority over pure visual impact in ways that differ from how other, more visible costume elements are typically chosen.
Certain footwear choices can also become memorable in their own right when a scene specifically draws attention to them, a close-up on a character's shoes at a key dramatic moment turning an otherwise background detail into a genuinely significant storytelling beat within that particular sequence of the film.
Though rarely the first element audiences consciously notice, footwear quietly completes a costume's overall statement, and its absence or inconsistency would likely be felt even by viewers who could not immediately explain exactly why something on screen looked slightly wrong or somehow out of place at all.
